WB: JNM Medical College Teachers Demonstrate Protest Demanding Pay Hike, Promotion

Nadia: Making demands to get included into the West Bengal Health Scheme (WBHS), implementation of a revised pay structure, and the due promotions, the medical teachers belonging to the JNM Medical College of Kalyani, West Bengal recently organized a sit-in demonstration in front of the Principal's chamber. The teachers would continue their protest until and unless their demands get fulfilled by WBHS or the State Government.
Almost 150 teachers had gathered under the banner of the Kalyani Medical Teachers' Association for this purpose and had submitted a memorandum of their demands to the principal of the Institution. The memorandum had been submitted with an aim of drawing the attention of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), and the State Government. However, the protesting teachers made sure that no academic activities could get hampered due to their protest.
Asking for the intervention of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the matter, the medical teachers have assured the CM that the academic and medical service in the college and the attached JNM Hospital wouldn't get hampered for this reason.

While commenting on the matter, Acting Principal of the College, Suman Kumar Roy informed the Telegraph India, "The grievances of the faculty doctors are quite genuine. As a faculty member, I also wholeheartedly support their demands. I have conveyed the grievances to the higher authorities and sought their immediate intervention so that the faculty staff can work here happily."
KMTA joint secretary Kaustav Chakraborty had informed the daily, "The college became operational in 2009. But since it has been brought under the control of the WBUHS, little has been done for the teaching doctor community. The most unfortunate part is that we are still being denied benefits of the West Bengal Health Scheme, which has already been provided to teachers of other medical colleges in Bengal. Facilities of the health scheme remain elusive despite our repeated appeals, even amid a pandemic."
Mentioning that the University authority had also denied them the career advancement scope with no timely promotions, KMTA President Subikas Biswas had said, "At the same time, WBUHS authorities did not bother to implement the revised pay benefits announced by the state government. This is sheer denial of our legitimate rights."
Meanwhile, an official of WBUHS has informed the daily that they have taken the issue of including the faculties under WBHS into consideration. "A process has started to provide the benefit but nothing has been finalized about the other demands," added the Official.
