Tragic Incident at RIMS Ranchi

Ranchi: In a tragic incident, a second-year postgraduate student in the orthopaedics department and his female friend allegedly fell from the third floor of a hostel building on the campus of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Ranchi. The student lost his life, while his female-injured friend is currently receiving treatment and is out of danger.

According to police, prima facie it appears to be a suicide case, however, more details will be ascertained after an investigation. As per a TOI news report, the doctor sustained serious injuries after falling from the third floor. He was spotted lying on the ground floor by the security guards, indicating that he reportedly fell from the third floor.

To determine the reason behind his alleged attempt to end life, the institute has passed an order to form a five-member committee led by the dean of academics, Sashibala Singh.

The deceased has been identified as a second-year postgraduate student in the orthopaedics department. He was a native of the Khunti district whereas the woman has been identified as the wife of one of the doctor's friends.

The incident took place late on October 20 night at around 10:30 pm in the institute's boys hostel No. 4 when the students and the security guards heard a loud thud. Upon reaching the area, the guard found the doctor and his female friend lying on the ground floor. Following this, they were taken to the institute's trauma centre but the doctor failed to survive and died just after midnight.

Speaking to ANI, the RIMS public relations official said, "Last night around 10:30 pm, an orthopaedic student of second year jumped from the third floor of the hostel. The boy had jumped with another girl, however, we do not know details about the girl who does not belong to RIMS. Guards rushed on the spot after receiving the information." Further, the official said that the woman who suffered shoulder injuries has recovered.

"Both were admitted to the hospital. However, Aakash passed away after two hours. The female is out of danger but has suffered injuries on her shoulder. No life-threatening injuries as such. We do not know if it was a suicide or not. The CCTV footage is being checked and further investigation is being carried out," the RIMS official said.

Suspicion has arisen about the woman's presence in the incident as girls are not allowed inside the boys’ hostel. The police will investigate each angle of the incident after recording the statement of the woman.

Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar told TOI, “The reason leading to the incident is not known. The woman’s statement will be recorded after she recovers. A case of unnatural death has been registered in this connection. Police will further investigate the incident.”
