JIPMER inaugurates wellness club at Murungapakkam PHC

Puducherry:The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), in partnership with the Murungapakkam Primary Health Centre (PHC), has inaugurated a Model Wellness Club and an Open Community Fitness Centre within the premises. This initiative, under the ICMR-funded Community Action for Lifestyle Modification (CALM) Project, supports the Fit India Mission by promoting healthier lifestyle habits, the PIB release stated. The CALM project is a community-based wellness initiative focusing on preventing non-communicable diseases through improvements in diet, physical activity, stress management, sleep, and substance use. The new Fitness Centre provides an inclusive and accessible environment for residents to engage in physical activity. This effort aligns with the transformation of PHCs into Health and Wellness Centres under theAyushman Bharatprogram, shifting the focus from curative care to prevention. Aligned with the objectives of the Fit India Movement, this collaboration promotes active living and community ownership of health, contributing to the national vision of a more active and health-conscious society amidst the rising burden of non-communicable diseases. had earlier reported that the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry has secured 4th rank in the medical colleges category in NIRF Rankings 2025 released by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi. The Institute has risen to the 4th position this year, moving up from its 5th rank in 2024-a testament to its consistent pursuit of excellence, a PIB release said. Congratulating the JIPMER fraternity on this remarkable achievement, Dr. Vir Singh Negi, its Director, said, “JIPMER has been consistently striving to enhance its teaching infrastructure and innovative learning methods. This recognition reflects our commitment to maintaining the highest standards in education, research, and holistic development of students.
