Rare Angioplasty Procedure at Yashoda Hospital

A doctor from Yashoda hospital has performed a rare angioplasty procedure.

The orthopedic surgeon performed the surgery on a 63-year-old Dr. Vishwanath Jadav who is from Maharashtra. His heart condition was nearly fatal, and he closely escaped the clutches of death after this rare procedure.

After being initially diagnosed, it was revealed that the patient was suffering from more than 90% blockage in the left main artery as well as the right coronary artery. A surgery was thus ruled out, in view of the very poor heart condition. There was a 90% life risk attached to the surgery.

As reported by the TOI, doctors from Yashoda hospital, where he was admitted, said that an emergency coronary angiogram revealed critical blocks in the left main artery as well as the right coronary artery. In view of his very poor heart function, surgery or any form of intervention would have been extremely risky with a high probability of on-table mortality. In the best of heart centres in any part of the world, this severity of disease would have entailed a life risk of more than 90%. At this juncture, the team of cardiologists performed ECMO-assisted angioplasty.

Extra corporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO) works like a heart and lung machine which supports the patient's circulation for a short period even if the heart or lung stops working. "It is the first angioplasty procedure successfully performed using ECMO at Hyderabad. This is yet another instance of a medical marvel achieved by the skill and expertise of the team of cardiologists," Dr. V Rajasekhar of Yashoda hospital said.
