Union Budget 2023: PGI Chandigarh Gets Rs 1,923 Crore

Chandigarh: The premier health institute, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI Chandigarh), has been allocated Rs 1,923.10 crore in the Union Budget for 2023, which is Rs 73.10 crore more than last year's revised budget estimates.
The highest allocation was for the creation of capital assets, with Rs 343.10 crore. In the previous year, under this head, Rs 270 crore was provided. The grant-in-aid for salaries and the budget estimate under the grant-in-aid (general) remain the same as the previous year, i.e. Rs 1,300 crore & Rs 270 crore, respectively.
Under the salary head, the PGI had proposed Rs 1,450 crore under salary head, Rs 300 crore under grant-in-aid (general) and Rs 500 crore under the creation of capital asset of Rs 10 crore was allocated under the budget head GIA (SAP). The proposed amount was Rs 2,250 crore for this year.

"This is initial allocation and as per our past experience we always get required funds under Supplementary Grants based on expenditure pattern and new developments like new recruitments and projects, etc., during the year," Kumar Abhay, Financial Advisor, PGI, said.
In an aim to provide quality treatment to patients with neurological and neuroscience disorders, a 300-bedded Advanced Neuroscience Centre is 90 percent completed and is expected to see completion by the middle of this year. Rs 495.31 crore was sanctioned for the establishment of the centre which will provide timely, affordable and advanced treatment to the patients.
Most of this budget will be utilised for the mother and child care centre, a neurosciences centre and satellite centres at Una and Ferozepur. The funds sanctioned under ‘creation of capital’ assets will be mainly used for setting up the mother and child care centre and the advanced neurosciences centre, The Tribune reports.
Similarly, work on the Satellite Centre of PGI at Sangrur (Punjab) is underway and is expected to be functional by early 2023. Although other work process relating to the setting up of the centre have been done, the recruitment of manpower for the operation of the centre is underway.
Tenders for the work of setting up of 300-bed Satellite Centre of PGI at Una, Himachal Pradesh were opened in November 2022 and the execution of work is expected to begin by the first quarter of 2023.
Apart from this, the medical aspirants have got a reason to celebrate as the MBBS programme at PGI has been scheduled to be functional this year. The institute has informed that new abs, classrooms, curriculum will be started soon. The process to fill posts for the programme is underway, the Indian Express reports.
