Incident at Sassoon General Hospital
Pune: A doctor attached to Sassoon General Hospital was recently assaulted by three men who were visiting a patient after the medical practitioner asked them to take off their footwear before entering the casualty ward, and adhere to the rule of only one person visiting the patient at a time.
However, the three men instead of listening to the doctor allegedly assaulted the doctor and the security guard and created a ruckus at the ward premises. They even vandalized the hospital properties including the doctor's cabin.
The accused have been identified as:
- Sohan Pawar (23)
- Yogesh Waghmare (22)
- Suraj Waghmare (20)
They have now been placed under arrest.

As per a current media report, the accused came to the casualty ward with the patient on Saturday afternoon after which the incident happened. While speaking to The Indian Express, Sub-inspector Tukaram Phad of Bundgarden police station said, "The patient was admitted in the afternoon. Over the following couple of hours, the people who had accompanied the patient kept coming in and going out of the ward. When the in-charge doctor asked them to keep their footwear outside the ward and adhere to the rule of only one person visiting the patient at a time, the accused created a ruckus at the ward premises."
He also added that the accused manhandled the doctor, assaulted the security guard and also vandalized the doctor's cabin.
The Chief Medical Officer of the ward at the time, Dr. Shankarlal Chaudhary, lodged an FIR of the incident. The accused have been charged under the Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to the assault on a public servant, physical assault, damage to public property, criminal intimidation, and relevant sections of The Maharashtra Medical Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010.
