Mangaluru: Dr Atul Kamath, a distinguished consultant ophthalmologist at Yenepoa Medical College, has been recognized with the esteemed International Ophthalmic Heroes of India Award. The honour has been bestowed upon him at the 82nd annual All India Ophthalmological Conference recently held in Kolkata.
Presented by the All India Ophthalmological Society, the award lauded Dr Kamath's groundbreaking research aimed at safeguarding the ocular health of ICU patients amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the peak of the pandemic's second wave, Dr Kamath spearheaded a comprehensive study in collaboration with his spouse, Dr Aditi Pai, and under the guidance of Dr Indravan Vasava, an esteemed assistant professor at Baroda Medical College and Sir SayajiRao Hospital in Vadodara. The title of his paper was “Impact of Ocular Care Training of Nursing Staff on Incidence of Ocular Surface Disorder Among Intensive Care Patients." Previously he presented the paper at the 41st Congress of the ESCRS, held from 8-12 September 2023 in Vienna-Austria, and bagged the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Trainee Bursary Award.

AIOS International Ophthalmic Heroes of India Award in recognition of winning the trainee bursary award at ESCRS 2023. The study was carried out, with 20 nursing staff members participating in Vadodara. For 30 days, participants received training on eye care, how to recognize dangerous symptoms, and how to notify an ophthalmologist if they did.
During the 82nd annual AIOS conference, Dr Atul also presented a paper titled "A Demographic Profile and Awareness Study of Hyperthyroidism among Patients in Western India." In the study, the doctor pointed out that females were more commonly affected in the age group of 60 to 69. "Majority of female patients were affected off treatment and unaware of the disease. Patients of lower socio-economic class were off treatment and unaware of the disease. He has also presented another paper titled "To study the prevalence of thyroid eye signs in patients of thyrotoxicosis in Western India" co-authored by his spouse Dr Aditi Pai. The study showed that not all patients suffering from hyperthyroidism necessarily have symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism.
