Pune: A ward boy at a private hospital in Wanowrie has been booked by the police for allegedly stealing a gold chain worth Rs 75000 from a 55-year-old dead patient.
The accused has been identified as a 36-year-old resident of Azad Nagar Wanowrie. He was working as a ward boy in the Ruby hall clinic's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the time of the event. A patient who was admitted to the ICU died on 25th March 2023 due to cardiac arrest.

When the dead body was handed over to the kin of the patient, they noticed that the jewellery that the patient was wearing was missing. The deceased was wearing a 15-gram gold chain, worth Rs 75,000. However, as the family had to perform last rites and was also mourning the death, the complaint was finally lodged only on Tuesday.
The police found suspicious activity by the accused after an investigation and technological analysis. The accused was questioned by the authorities but initially was not booked and was denied the crime based on some evidence. Later, he revealed that he had taken the gold chain from the dead body. Police have already retrieved the stolen gold chain from the accused, reports the Hindustan Times.
People are questioning the integrity of healthcare professionals after the shocking incident. His acts have been denounced by medical ethicists as abhorrent and a betrayal of the faith in healthcare professionals, and they have sought severe punishment for the accused in order to serve as a deterrence to others.
Santosh Gaikwad, police sub-inspector at Wanawadi police station said, “We have invoked IPC sections 379 and 404 against the accused and the stolen golden chain has been recovered from him.’’
