No Proposal To Set Up More Medical Colleges: Meghalaya Education Minister

Shillong: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday said there is no proposal to set up more medical colleges in other districts of the State. "There is no proposal to set up medical colleges in Ri-Bhoi district, Jaintia Hills district and West Khasi Hills district," Rymbui informed in the Assembly.
"As of now, the government has considered to set up medical colleges only in West Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills long time back.

However due to so many issues, construction of the Shillong Medical College could not be started," he said. Stating that the construction of the Tura medical college is in progress, the Education Minister said, "Let us first finish this medical college at Tura then we will do the needful as and when funds is available," he said.
However, TMC legislator Charles Pyngrope said that setting up medical colleges is a necessity in the state. Another TMC legislator Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang urged the government to consider setting up such institutions to ensure that the aspiring medical students do not have to go outside.
"The government should have thought of a policy to come up with more medical colleges considering the fact that many students are looking for medical seats outside the state," Shangpliang said.
