NMC Specifies New Starting Date, Duration For PG Medical Academic Year 2021

New Delhi: Clarifying on the impartation period of PG medical Degree and Diploma courses, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has notified about the commencement of the academic year 2021 and the stipulated time span for their completion.
The Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations 2000, drafted by the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI), now National Medical Commission, as amended from time to time, stipulates the date of starting of the academic session as well as the duration of Postgraduate medical courses being offered across the country.
Referring to the said regulations, a recent notification has been issued on the official website of the NMC wherein the apex medical regulator noted the delay in the starting of the Board Speciality Courses on account of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the year 2021 and the consequent halt to the PG medical admissions.
Therefore, the National Medical Commission has decided that the academic session for the Board Speciality Courses for the year 2021 shall commence from 1st Feb 2022, the NMC notification issued under the authority of PG Medical Education Board's President, Dr MK Ramesh, clearly stated.
Moreover, specifying the duration of PG medical degree and Diploma courses, the NMC said, "The academic Curriculum of the diploma and degree courses shall be complete by 31st Dec. 2023 and 31 Dec.2024 respectively."
However, the NMC has further mandated that the postgraduate Degree and Diploma student should complete the required period of 36 and 24 months respectively to complete the course.
Recently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) released a copy of the NEET PG COunselling schedule on the website along with the MCC letter to the NMC mentioning that the schedule has to be ratified by the Supreme Court. MCC specified timelines for Round 1, Round 2, Mop-up round counselling sessions for both the All India Quota (AIQ) as well as the State quota admission process.
As per the notification, the Round 1 counselling for All India Quota/ Deemed/ Central Universities/ Institutes/ PG DNB/ AFMS to be conducted by MCC of DGHS will be carried out from 12th January 2022 to 21st January 2022; while State Counselling is to be conducted by respective State authorities will be held from 20th January 2022 to 24th January 2022.
For Round 1, candidates have to first register with the MCC. After the registration, they will have to select and lock their medical college preferences from the options available till January 17. The verification of candidates by the respective institutes would be conducted from January 18 to January 19, 2022. This will be followed by the seat allotment process, on January 20 and 21. The result will be declared on January 22, 2022.
The last date of joining after the completion of overall counselling procedures including stray vacancy round is 16th March 2022 for AIQ seats and 10th March 2022 for state counselling candidates.
had reported about the delay in NEET PG counselling which has kept the admission process in limbo. The case was originally slated for hearing on January 6. However, resident doctors have been protesting in Delhi seeking an early hearing, since the NEET PG counselling had been put on hold due to the pending matter. When the matter finally came up before the bench, the Supreme Court had passed an interim order with certain directions after the 2-day consecutive hearing.
