Hyderabad: Pointing out deficiencies, the National Medical Commission has recently issued show-cause notices to five private medical colleges in Telangana.
This comes after the a team of the apex medical regulator NMC inspected those medical colleges and found lack in all aspects including internal infrastructure, availability of doctors and their ability of teaching students.
After the colleges submit their replies to the show-cause notice, NMC will decide on an action. Refusing to give details, an NMC member informed TOI that two of the five medical colleges are new institutes.
As per the recent data provided by MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, there are a total number of 34 medical colleges in Telangana with an intake capacity of 5340 MBBS seats. Among these, 11 colleges are by the Government and they have an intake capacity of 1790 seats. On the other hand, 23 colleges with 3550 MBBS seats are run by private management.

The latest media report of the Times of India adds that during a recent inspection, the NMC team found deficiencies in five private medical colleges in the State and issued show-cause notices to all of them.
While commenting on the matter, an NMC member told TOI, "In the surprise inspections we did over a week back, irregularities were found in all of them. Two did not have the required strength of professors, while all the five lacked basic infrastructure and laboratories. Also, they did not have the required student strength to be declared fit for the courses."
Now, these five colleges are facing 'appropriate action' by NMC, which could include mostly cancellation of permission. However, the matter does not end there as NMC has now decided to increase the number of inspections.
Confirming the same, the NMC official told TOI, "We are going to increase our inspections as many colleges have downsized their staff and infrastructure during the pandemic. We have to monitor this."
