Ariyalur Medical College has finally been given approval by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for admitting 150 MBBS students for the 2021-2022 academic year.

According to a recent report by The Hindu, the proposal in this regard was submitted by the State Government earlier and now NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body, has approved the MBBS admission from this academic year after inspecting the college.

The Hindu had earlier reported that the State Health Minister Ma Subramanian in a statement had mentioned that the Union Health Ministry had approved 150 new seats in the four new government medical colleges at Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Nagapattinam, and Ariyalur.

With this, confirmation for another 600 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu was given by the Union Government.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, after the State Government sent its proposal, the National Medical Commission team had inspected the newly-constructed medical college. As the commission was satisfied with the infrastructure of the college, it has finally given it the permission to admit MBBS students in 150 MBBS seats.

Earlier, the Central Government had approved 850 MBBS seats in seven out of eleven newly constituted medical colleges. At that time, the newly established medical colleges in Virudhunagar, Kallakurichi, and Ooty had received the nod from Union Government to admit 150 MBBS students each. Apart from these, the medical colleges in Namakkal, Tiruvallur, Tirupur, and Ramanathapuram had been granted to fill 100 MBBS seats in each of these colleges.

However, taking note of the inspection report of the NMC team, the Centre had also asked the State for upgrading the infrastructure, mostly civil works in many medical colleges. Later, the State Health Minister had confirmed that after rectifying all the minor deficiencies, the state would seek Centre's nod for another 800 MBBS seats including 600 seats in the four medical colleges in Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Dindigul, and Krishnagiri.

Before these newly constituted medical colleges, the State had a total number of 52 medical colleges, including 26 run by the Government. The data revealed by the MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar clarified that the State had a total number of 3650 MBBS seats in the Government Medical Colleges and after the Centre's nod for additional 1,450 MBBS seats, the total number of Government medical seats in the State has crossed the 5000 benchmark.
