MBBS student from Odisha allegedly raped in Bengal, police launch probe

Kolkata: Unidentified men allegedly raped a MBBS student in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district. The medico is a second year MBBS student at a private medical college and is currently ungoing treatment. The incident took place nearly a year later, after a26-year-old postgraduate trainee was raped and murdered inside Kolkata's famous RG Kar Medical College. Speaking to PTI, police officials informed, "A medical college student from Odisha was allegedly raped by unidentified men in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district...The medical student, from Jaleswar in Odisha, is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital." The incident occurred outside the private medical college campus in Durgapur on Friday night when the second-year student went out with one of her friends for dinner, her family members said. Talking to reporters, the parents of the student said they reached Durgapur this morning after getting a call from friends of their daughter. The mother alleged that her daughter was gang-raped late Friday night after leaving the college campus for dinner with a friend. India Todayhas reported that the medico, a 2nd year MBBS student, of a private medical college was allegedly dragged and raped inside hospital premises in West Bengal. Sources informed the daily that the student stepped out of the campus on Friday at 8.30 pm with a male friend. Near the campus gate, a man allegedly dragged her to a secluded area behind the hospital and raped her. The father of the MBBS student further told India Today, "When she reached the campus gate, around four to five persons were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded Rs 3,000 to return it." According to the student's father, the family received a phone call from her friends informing them about the incident. “We arrived this morning and filed a police complaint. We chose this college for its strong academic reputation, hoping to provide our daughter with the best opportunities,” he said.
