Shillong: In a major development for MBBS admissions in Meghalaya, the state cabinet has recently approved the Meghalaya Private Medical Institution (regulation of admission, fixation of fees and reservation) Ordinance, 2024 - Meghalaya Medical College Regulation and Admission into MBBS course, 2024.

The ordinance will come into effect post-signing by the Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya.

The decision was made to facilitate students to enroll in PA Sangma International Medical College of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).

"Following this, the P.A. Sangma Medical College at the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya will begin to operate soon," an official release stated, reports IANS.

The varsity authority and the construction of the medical college were embroiled in controversy after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused the unscientific tree cutting at the campus of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya was responsible for a huge flash flood in Guwahati.

Now, the Meghalaya Cabinet on Wednesday met at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills as part of the Cabinet on the Move initiative and passed the Meghalaya Private Medical Institution (regulation of admission, fixation of fees and reservation) Ordinance, 2024 and Meghalaya Medical College Regulation and Admission into MBBS course, 2024.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh said the Cabinet has cleared the ordinance and will meet again to constitute the Regulatory Body, adds UNI.

The regulatory committee will be notified and accordingly, fixation of fees, implementation of reservation policy and allotment of seats as per the norms of the government and guided by the ruling of various courts will be effective,” she said.

The PA Sangma Medical College named after former Lok Sabha Speaker will operate soon after the signing of the ordinance by the governor, which will be duly notified.
