NMC Warns Medical and Dental Aspirants

New Delhi: Through a recent notice, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned the medical and dental aspirants against taking admission in MBBS/BDS courses in Pakistan.

Issuing a public notice in this regard on April 28, 2022, NMC, the apex medical regulator in India has mentioned that the MBBS/BDS graduates from Pakistan will not be eligible to appear in the FMGE screening test and practice in India.

This comes shortly after a similar warning had been issued by the Dental Council of India (DCI) a couple of days back.

The NMC public notice dated April 28 read, "All concerned are advised not to travel to Pakistan for pursuing Medical Education. Any Indian national/Overseas Citizen of India who intends to take admission in MBBS/BDS or equivalent medical course in any medical college of Pakistan shall not be eligible for appearing in FMGE or seeking employment in India on the basis of educational qualifications (in any subject) acquired in Pakistan except those who had joined Pakistan degree colleges/institutions before December 2018 or later after obtaining Security Clearance from MHS till date."

"However, migrants and their children who have acquired medical or higher education in Pakistan and have been awarded citizenship by India would continue to be eligible for appearing in FMGE/NEXT or seeking employment in India after obtaining Security Clearance from MHA," it added.

Recently similar stand on higher education degrees from Pakistan was taken by University Grants Commission and All India Council for Technical Education as well.

As per the latest media report by Economic Times, such a move from the higher education regulatory bodies has come after several discussions among various stakeholders including the Ministry of External Affairs, Union Home Ministry and the NMC officials.

The daily further adds that officials have informed that Pakistan is allegedly using the medical sponsorship programme to fund terror. While commenting on the matter, one of the officials told Economic Times, "Medical seats in Pakistani institutes are allocated to various separatist organisations who, in turn, offer them to students for a cost, thus helping the groups raise money. In the past, seats have been offered to family members of slain militants."
