Kolkata:Maj Gen Sanjay Maurya assumed charge as the new Commandant of the prestigiousCommand Hospitalin Kolkata on September 6, 2025. The ceremonial handover was attended by senior military officials, including Lt Gen RC Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, who formally congratulated Maj Gen Maurya on his appointment. Command Hospital, located in Alipore, Kolkata, is a premier tertiary care and teaching institution with a legacy dating back to 1870. Originally established as a 60-bed British military facility near the Racecourse, the hospital has evolved into a state-of-the-art medical centre since its relocation and expansion in 1968. He has held prestigious appointments of HoD Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at AFMC Pune and Army Hospital R& R. His academic contributions include a well-regarded 2019 study on the management of war wounds, which addressed the complexities of delayed reconstructive procedures often faced in battlefield medicine. The research emphasised how early life-saving interventions often postpone reconstruction, underlining the importance of timing and specialisation in improving recovery outcomes for injured soldiers. Lt Gen Tiwari, who has led the Eastern Command since 2023, emphasized the strategic importance of Command Hospital and expressed confidence in Maj Gen Maurya’s ability to elevate its standards further.
