Mysore: Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI) and its attached Krishnarajendra (K R) Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital are all set to invite global tenders for its restoration project months after the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai allocated Rs 89 crore in the recent budget for the same.
Acting on a proposal submitted by the MMCRI, the Karnataka government allocated a budget amount of Rs 89 crore a few months back for upgrading the facilities at MMCRI, K R Hospital, Cheluvamba Hospital, PKTB (Princess Krishnajammanni Tuberculosis) Sanatorium on KRS road and for the renovation of Medical College Boys and Girls Hostel blocks.
The hospital building has a heritage value, and the team had earlier reported that the restoration work of MMCRI would use the Government Ayurveda College building as its model, as the latter is also one of the heritage structures in Mysore. They are planning to keep the original architecture intact, in addition to opinions from heritage experts.

As per a media report in the Hindu, the allocation had become necessary as the structures were not in a good condition and required a complete reconstruction. The aim is to complete the renovation over the next three years before the MMCRI's centenary celebrations begin in 2024.
Dean and Director Dr. K.R. Dakshayini stated that this is one of the first few cases where the government has allocated such a huge amount for the restoration work of a medical college. During the period of the former Dean and Director of MMCRI Dr. H.S. Dinesh, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) which also included the cost of the work was submitted to the government upon figuring out the fourteen blocks and buildings which was in need of repair and renovation, reports the Star of Mysore.
The buildings which would be rebuilt on the basis of heritage norms were inspected by PWD Department engineers who then helped in the preparation of the DPR. It has been reported that various elected representatives and ministers like MP Pratap Simha, and MLA L. Nagendra had held meetings with MMCRI officials and had made repeated representations to the Government for DPR approval and sanction of funds before the budget announcement by the government.
The restoration work of the medical college is slated to begin in a month.
