Puducherry: Opining that the Healthcare sector would play a key role in the coming years, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Medical College Building at Karaikal New Campus of JIPMER-Phase I at the function organized by Government of Puducherry on February 25. The Prime Minister had also inaugurated a Blood Centre at the State-run Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), during the occasion.
The proposed new Karaikal JIPMER Campus would be built at a cost of Rs 291 crores. On the other hand, the building cost for the newly inaugurated Blood Centre at JIPMER had been Rs 28 crore.
PTI reports that the inauguration of the blood centre was "in line with our objective to provide quality healthcare to all," he said.

As per the latest media report by the New Indian Express, the Prime Minister on 25.02.2021 had announced projects worth over Rs 3000 crores in the Union territory at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam JIPMER auditorium.
During the occasion the Prime Minister had quoted from the Tamil treatise Tirukkural, penned by saint-poet Tiruvalluvar. He said "learning and education are the true wealth while all other things are not stable."
Stressing the need for quality health professionals to promote healthcare, he said, "Phase I of medical college building at (JIPMER) Karaikal new campus is a step in that direction. This new environment-friendly complex will have all modern teaching facilities required." The project costs Rs 291 crores and it is meant to provide medical training to people of the region as well as generate employment.
While inaugurating the new Blood Centre at JIPMER, the Prime Minister had said, as reported by NIE, "This new facility will accommodate advanced facilities for long term storage of blood, blood products and stem cells banking."
Modi also laid the foundation stone of Synthetic Athletic Track at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in the Union Territory.
Observing that prosperity was closely linked to good health, Modi stated that India in the last seven years has made many efforts to improve fitness and wellness. The SAI hostel is "one more attempt to improve" sporting facilities in India, he said, adding, the 100-bed building will accommodate sportswoman from volleyball, hockey, weightlifting and kabaddi among others.
"In this context, I am delighted to lay the foundation stone for a 400-metre synthetic athletic track at the sports complex here. This is a part of the Khelo India scheme. With the coming of good sports facilities to Puducherry, youth from this state can excel in national and global sports meets," he said in this context.
During the occasion, the PM had also inaugurated the 100-bed girls hostel at Lawspet and a reconstructed Heritage Mairie Building. He had also laid the foundation stone to the four-lane NH 45-A saying that India needed world-class infrastructure to cater to its development needs. The foundation of Puducherry Port Development under the Sagarmala Scheme had also been laid by the PM during the occasion.
