New Delhi: In a lifesaving intervention, a 42-year-old, from Delhi, was saved at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, after he suffered from a massive cardiac arrest.
The patient was driving to a family gathering when he experienced discomfort in his chest, as the uneasiness persisted he went to another local facility in Delhi, where he collapsed upon arrival. At that facility, he underwent an ECG and was also given CPR multiple times.

The patient was undergoing an acute heart attack along with cardiogenic shock hence he had collapsed. He was put on a ventilator and was given CPR & multiple shock treatment repeatedly to revive his heart’s function, but nothing helped improve his condition, his condition was rapidly deteriorating.
The patient was transferred to the ER of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in an unconscious and critical condition. He was on ventilatory support and was being given CPR continuously, even in the ambulance. The Patient was admitted under the supervision of Dr Amit Mittal, Senior Consultant, Cardiology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals & Dr Mukesh Goel, Senior Consultant, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. The Cath Lab was kept ready and on standby before the patient reached the hospital.
Dr Amit Mittal, Senior Consultant, Cardiology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “On shifting to Apollo, he was taken to cardiac Cath Lab where immediate angiography was done which showed 99-100% block in a main artery (LAD)of the heart. An immediate angiography and angioplasty of the blocked vessel was done. After this procedure, his heart rhythm stabilized and heart function normalized. He was taken off from ventilator support after two days of the procedure. He was discharged on 2nd December, with his heart function at 30% and in his recent follow-up visit his heart function has normalized up to 60% which is normal.”
Dr Mukesh Goel, Senior Consultant, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said,” This was an extremely critical case since the patient’s condition was deteriorating every minute. He was in a state of repeated cardiac arrests (ventricular fibrillation) and despite multiple shock treatments and CPR, his condition was not stabilizing. When he was being transferred to Apollo, it was important for us to act fast.”
