Hyderabad Hospital Faces Criticism For Charging Rs 54 Lakh Bill For 10 Day Treatment

Hyderabad: Pointing out an incident of overpriced treatment, a Hyderabad-based private hospital's exorbitant bill was recently publicized through Twitter by the spokesman of Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), Amjed Ullah Khan, who recently tweeted about a bill by the Citizen Hospital in Nallagandla charging Rs 54 lakhs for the 10-day treatment of a patient.
The family members reportedly paid Rs 20 lakhs already for the treatment of the patient identified as Syed Rahmath Uddin. Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) is a political party based in Telangana.

Meanwhile, in another tweet, Khan stated that the hospital is demanding Rs 29 lakhs more. He thus requested the concerned authorities to take necessary action to shift the patient to Gandhi or NIMS hospital.
In the tweet, he wrote, "Hospital authorities are demanding Rs 29 lakhs more to shift the patient, This is too much, Is there any agency to check the loot of this corporate hospitals."
During the time of the COVID pandemic, the private hospitals in Hyderabad were reported to be charging exorbitantly for treatment. The Telangana Public Health and Family Welfare Department had directed 44 private hospitals to refund the overcharged money to the patients. Four hospitals reportedly returned Rs 10 lakhs. Five of them returned an amount between Rs. 5 lakhs and 10 lakhs, and five other hospitals had returned Rs 3.2 lakhs to Rs 39,9440, as per a media report in Siasat.
Private hospitals in Hyderabad have a history of charging heavy amounts for treatment, which the middle-class and BPL people are often unable to access, which particularly affects them more if the patients are not covered under any health insurance scheme.
Following the merging of the Telangana government’s Aarogyasri Health Scheme and Centre’s Ayushman Bharat Scheme, the maximum health protection given per family is Rs 5 lakh per annum, and the scheme covers only a set amount of diseases.
