Ahmedabad: The post of superintendent remains vacant at the three major general hospitals functioning under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation since no one is willing to join due to hectic work and insufficient salary despite repeated attempts by the corporation.
The three hospitals, Sheth V.S. General Hospital, Sheth Lallubhai Gordhandas (LG) Municipal General Hospital, and Smt. Shardaben Chimanlal Lalbhai Municipal General Hospital has been functioning with in-charge officials for the past six to eight months and without full-time Resident Medical Officers (RMOs).

The corporation had issued s three times in the past six months to find a permanent head for the hospitals but didn't receive any applications. Despite the corporation's attempt to lure in doctors by calling it a 'plum posting,' the hectic and heavy working load and insufficient salary have been reported as the reason behind the unwillingness of doctors.
According to a media report in the Ahmedabad Mirror, the job of superintendent or RMO would put immense pressure and involve working 24*7. In addition, they would have to appease everyone, including corporators and political bosses in Gandhinagar. Further, the salary is less as compared to the demands of the job since a senior doctor receives Rs 2.5 lakh per month, and the superintendent would receive an extra amount of Rs 3000- Rs 4000, which the doctors are stating to be insufficient.
A senior doctor in V.S. hospital said, "As a senior doctor, I serve in the hospital and also do private practice. However, a superintendent is unable to do so as he or she has to please so many people. It becomes difficult to even survive."
Stating that there are no full-time heads in major civic hospitals, Mayor Kirit Parmar said, "Superintendents have more administrative duties instead of medical or teaching work, so the majority of doctors are not interested. The AMC is trying hard to get full-time heads and ensure smooth functioning of the hospitals."
