GSVM Medical College Offers Breast Cancer Treatment At Re 1

Kanpur: During this breast cancer month, the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College in Kanpur have come up with a new technological process that would allow them to offer treatment for breast cancer at only Rs 1.
The hospital would reportedly be using onco mammoplasty technique to treat breast cancer patients.

Dr Sanjay Kala, Principal, GSVM Medical College said that the new technology would help in removing only the infected part from the breasts of the patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The removed part would be subsequently reshaped by a volume replacement method, explained Dr Kala.
Explaining the treatment method, Dr Kala said, "If there is more than 15 per cent of the tissue, then we do volume replacement, that is, we put implants or flesh from other place. If it is below 15 per cent, then we do volume displacement. That is we modify the breast tissue and put it there."
"Previously we had to remove the breast in which the cancer existed, but now that is not the case. In the patients in which the cancer is not advanced stage and has not spread in the body, we can re-model the breast in these patients," he said.
The principal also noted that surgery performed on a 48-year-old patient through this technique was successful. He said that patients' mental health gets affected during the first breast cut. He said, "Sometimes they even take suicidal steps. There will be a lot of benefit from this technique."
Further, Dr Kala said that the new initiative had been made possible due to the various schemes of government for cancer patients as the latter has also made clear that government hospitals should not charge anything for performing operations, reports the India Today.
Further, Dr Kala said that the treatment cost for breast cancer in private hospitals ranges from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh. He said, "Since we have plastic surgeons and cancer surgeons, it was possible for us to make this surgery cost-free as we didn't have to bring any private doctors." Speaking to News18, he said, "Specialty of getting treatment in a medical college is that here you will have to fill out a form of Re 1 and the rest all the treatment will be taken care of by the hospital. Apart from this, the benefits of many government schemes are also being given directly to the patients."
Dr Kala added that the new technique would prevent depression amongst women, adding that their life expectancy would also not be affected.
