New Delhi: Dr Prakash B. Behere, a stalwart in the discipline, held the esteemed position of Vice-Chancellor at D Y Patil Education Society Kohlapur has recently passed away. Before this role, he served as the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, Wardha.
Dr Behere earned his MD in psychiatry from the prestigious Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. His illustrious career is further marked by designations such as FNAMS, FIIOPM, and D.Ac. Throughout his professional journey, he undertook extensive research in critical areas, including Child Sexual Abuse in Wardha District, the Impact of Marriage on pre-existing Mental Disorders, and the concerning issue of farmers' suicides in Wardha District. His top areas of expertise are Bipolar Disorder (BPD), Schizophrenia, Amenorrhea, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He received the prestigious BC Roy Award in 2013.

Widely recognized for his expertise, Dr Behere's insights extended to the global stage, as evidenced by his interview featured in the August 2016 issue of the National Geographic Magazine. His most recent scholarly contribution manifests in the form of a systematic review titled 'A comprehensive analysis on the effects of electronic media on diet, exercise, and sexual activity among Adolescents.' The passing of Dr Prakash B. Behere marks the end of an era in Indian psychiatry, leaving behind a profound legacy of scholarship and dedicated service to the advancement of mental health understanding and treatment.
His sudden death has created a void that can not be easily fulfilled. Psychiatrist Om Prakash extended his condolence through social media and stated, "We bid farewell to Dr Prakash B. Behere, a vanguard of Indian psychiatry. His seminal work on rural mental health and psychosocial dynamics will forever illuminate our understanding. A B.C. Roy awardee, his legacy transcends time."
