Panchkula: Bringing good news to the nurses of Chandigarh, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has approved the creation of 323 posts of nursing officers for Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32.
The long-standing demand of GMCH to have more posts for nurses has finally received a positive response since the demand was pending for 17 years. Of the 323 posts, 316 posts are of staff nurses, six nursing sisters and one matron.
The proposal was first sent in 2005 by the GMCH seeking the creation of 656 nursing posts from the Ministry of Health and family welfare. However, the proposal was sent without following the guidelines of the Indian Nursing Council.

Following an adjustment to the pending proposal, the government has agreed to create 323 nurse positions. Meanwhile, the new posts will be in addition to the existing posts in the nursing cadre.
According to The Tribune, the hospital has currently 774 sanctioned posts for staff nurses, including the nursing superintendent, deputy nursing superintendent, assistant nursing superintendent, nursing sister and nursing officer. The hospital is in the process of recruiting 182 staff nurses.
While sanctioning the posts, the government has asked GMCH to ensure that the nursing officers are recruited on regular basis and the pay level of the posts approved should not exceed the pay level of the posts already existent in the same grade.
Explaining the reason for the decrease in the sanctioned posts, Dabkesh Kumar, president of the Nursing Welfare association, GMCH ing TOI, "A total of 30% of promotional posts have been cancelled as they were not sent to the ministry as per the nursing norms. That is why the number of sanctioned posts which was 656 was reduced."
