Patiala Doctors Protest

Following an attack on an ENT Junior resident doctor, the doctors of the Government Rajindra Hospital have staged a demonstration demanding action against the miscreants.

They demanded that a case should be registered under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act.

A case was registered at the police station against those unidentified miscreants under the following sections:

• 353 (assaults or uses criminal force to any person being a public servant)
• 186 (voluntarily obstructs any public servant in the discharge of his public functions)
• 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt)
• 148 (rioting)
• 149 (offence is committed by any member of an unlawful assembly)

The team had earlier reported that 8 miscreants attacked and injured a resident doctor. The assaulted doctor is a third-year MS student in the ENT department. He was on duty at the hospital’s emergency ward during the night hours. He was saving a critical patient when he saw 6 men misbehaving with nurses. He intervened but the miscreants allegedly assaulted him and he ended up with multiple facial fractures and skull injuries.

However, police have placed one under arrest in connection with the case. The case was not registered under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. Hence, the Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers’ Association, Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), along with the Nursing Association and Class IV Union, held a protest on the hospital premises.

The doctors claimed they want a long-lasting solution to stop any such incidents from happening again. According to The Tribune, a doctor said, “We will continue our peaceful protest till the arrest of the culprits and initiation of measures to restore the confidence of the doctors.”
