Kakinada: Medical College Expansion

East Godavari Collector D. Muralidhara Reddy has asked the officials to utilize the vacant site available both in Rangaraya Medical College and the adjoining Industrial Training Institute (ITI) for the purpose of medical college expansion without shifting the oldest ITI.

The Collector, along with Joint Collector Revenue wing Dr. G. Lakashmisha and RDO Chinnikrishna, inspected the medical college and also the ITI on Thursday in the wake of the proposed expansion of the medical college for accommodating GGH as the teaching hospital in the same premises.

He said the oldest ITI, which has a maximum number of 14 courses, need not be shifted. The Collector went around the laboratories in the ITI such as:

• Welding
• Motor Mechanism
• Fitter
• Turner
• Machinist
• Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

He enquired the ITI officials on the number of constructions in its premises spread over 15.76 acres.

They explained to the Collector that apart from ITI, the offices of the district employment exchange, regional deputy director's office, a 200-bedded ST hostel, and a 33KVA electric substation were there in the premises.

They also told him that there was a driving track in an area of six acres used for imparting training to students in diesel mechanism and motor mechanism, and crores of rupees worth of laboratory equipment.

Every year, one thousand students pass out completing their course in the ITI established in 1947. Later, the Collector inspected the vacant site in the medical college and discussed with the Principal Dr. Babji over the site requirement for the construction of a teaching hospital in the campus.
