The wife of the brain dead patient had alleged that the hospital authorities had allegedly asked her to donate kidneys of the patient in lieu of the treatment cost.

Nellore: A case has been registered against Simhapuri Hospitals under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 384 (extortion) and Section 19 of the Transplantation Human Organs Act for allegedly asking the patient's relative for organ donation in lieu of the treatment charge of Rs 1.27 lakh.

The case relates to a patient who was critically injured in a road accident after which he was rushed to the Simhapuri Hospital in Nellore.

After treatment, the hospital administration handed over the bill of Rs 1.27 lakh to which the wife of the patient expressed an inability to pay. It was alleged that the hospital authorities had allegedly asked her to donate kidneys of the patient in lieu of the treatment cost.

Further, news of the incident reached the Nellore collector, who then he formed a five-member team to probe into allegations against the hospital.

The team probed into the matter and submitted the report observing that the one-day treatment charges were inflated, going by Rs 1.27 lakh demanded from the wife of the patient.

According to the collector, it was mentioned in an official note pertaining to the condition of the organs before extracting them that the kidneys are fit for transplantation, reports the Deccan Chronicle.

The doctors mention the condition but not its fitness for transplantation. The recipient was present in the same hospital, the coincidence raised doubts over the intention of the hospital authorities.

Subsequently, the report was sent to the Superintendent of Police, Nellore for further investigation following which the police registered the case of IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 384 (extortion) and Section 19 of the Transplantation Human Organs Act, 1994.
