Bhubaneswar: In a significant achievement, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar has been conferred with the esteemed Asia Safe Surgical Implant Consortium QIP Award 2023 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
This recognition underscores the institute's commendable efforts in ensuring the quality of instrument and implant reprocessing within its premises.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar stood out amongst twenty-eight prestigious hospitals from across Asia, emerging as the frontrunner in this distinguished program. Notably, this marks the first time an Indian institution has secured the top position since the inception of the awards.

The program, which witnessed the participation of renowned healthcare facilities, was facilitated by 3M India, a key partner instrumental in its implementation across various countries, including India.
Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, the Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, expressed his elation alongside the institute's staff members upon receiving the coveted award. Present at the ceremony were Ujwala Paul, Head Clinical Specialist, Puja Pal, Regional Clinical Specialist, and other esteemed members of 3M India.
The primary objective of this initiative was to establish and uphold the highest standards of quality in reprocessing various instruments and implants within the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) of the hospital. With approximately 2,500 packets processed daily, the CSSD unit plays a pivotal role in maintaining surgical safety and preventing hospital-acquired infections.
The sterilization processes employed encompass autoclaving, plasma technique, and Ethylene Oxide (EtO) techniques, validated through physical, chemical, and biological indicators.
Dr. Biswas emphasized that this recognition will serve as a catalyst in their commitment to upholding patient safety standards. He further iterated the institute's dedication to maintaining excellence in healthcare delivery.
The award, Dr Biswas said, will encourage us to maintain the standards of patient safety, reports UNI.
This accolade not only celebrates AIIMS Bhubaneswar's triumph but also underscores the collective efforts of the healthcare community towards advancing patient safety and well-being on a global scale.
