The team, official sources said, would assess whether the second unit of the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) can be set up there with the infrastructure and other facilities available there.
Odisha Health Minister N K Das said "we will try to see that the second AIIMS is set up there after the team submitted its report."
He said the NTPC Medical College and Hospital, Sundergarha is located close to Jharsuguda Airport and geographically ideal for the second AIIMS.
Many people in Western Odisha and in the adjoining areas would be benefited if the AIIMS comes up there, he said.
Mr Das said he had written to the Union government to set up the second AIIMS at Sundergarh. The team came to assess the infrastructure facilities after receiving his letter.
The Minister said he has written to the Union Health Minister not to shift the Malaria Research Centre from Rourkela to Ranchi.
Rourkela is an important city and the Union government should reconsider its decision, he said.
